Speaking Room

The Speaking Room is a video call between two learners. One of you is the examiner and asks the questions; the other answers. Halfway through you swap roles, so both of you practise.

Before you start

• Use a computer or phone with a camera and microphone, and headphones if you can.
• Allow camera and microphone access when the browser asks.
• Your partner must have a Mockfy account. Add them as a friend to find them quickly.

Starting a session

1. Open Speaking Room and choose a topic. Search the list, or filter by Easy, Medium or Hard. A tick marks topics you have practised; Pick One opens a new topic close to your level.
2. Inside the topic, pick a partner: a friend, or any learner by @username.
3. Choose who asks first: you, your partner or random.
4. Press Call.

Your partner gets a call card on whatever Mockfy page they are on, with one minute to accept.

No partner? Find a random one

Press Random partner above the topic list (any topic), or Find a random partner inside a topic. Mockfy pairs you with the next learner who is looking too: learners on the same topic first, and anyone who chose any topic. As you both asked for a partner, the session opens straight away for both of you, with who asks first chosen at random. Press Stop looking to leave the queue.

During the session

1. When your partner accepts, you both see the join screen. Check your camera and microphone, then join.
2. The session opens full screen: your partner fills the screen and you are in the small window, bottom right.
3. The answer timer starts only when both of you are in.
4. The examiner sees the questions above their small window, reads each one aloud and presses Next question.
5. After the last question, press Swap roles: the questions move to the other person.
6. At the end, press Finish session.

Your result

Both of you receive:

• an estimated speaking band (fluency, vocabulary and grammar; pronunciation is not marked),
• the transcript of your own answers,
• tips on what to improve,
• points and a streak day.

Staying in the session

Until you press Leave you stay in the session. If the page reloads, or you press Back or open another page, Mockfy brings you straight back to the call. Leaving ends the session for both of you.

Privacy

The video goes directly between your two browsers and is not recorded. Only your own answers are recorded, to turn them into text for your band; the recordings are not kept.

Tip: If the call does not connect after about 20 seconds, your networks may block direct calls. Reload the page, or switch one of you to mobile data or another Wi-Fi. See Troubleshooting.
